The first concrete step: the Čimická × Vánková crossing
The project to make the pedestrian crossing on Čimická safer, at the junction with Vánková, is finally posted on the official notice board and work on it should begin any day now.
Among other things, the proposed change includes adding a pedestrian refuge island and further measures to make crossing the busy Čimická clearer and easier for pedestrians.
We are glad that this change is finally moving towards construction. At the same time we know that one improved crossing is not enough. Čimická is a long and very busy street, and safety has to be addressed systematically.
Another place where you are calling for change: Žalovská × Čimická
It was precisely on the basis of reports from local people that we brought the request to restore the crossing at the junction of Žalovská and Čimická to the transport committee's June meeting.
The place where the crossing used to be has long been confusing, among other things because of drivers who park in the junction itself and so worsen the view when pulling out onto Čimická.
Thank you to everyone who gets in touch with us. It is your experience that shows where everyday traffic does not work and where better solutions need to be found.
Unfortunately, the proposal to deal with this place was not supported by the representatives of SPD/Trikolóra and ODS.
But that is not the end of it for us. We will keep looking for and pushing a solution that improves safety for pedestrians and drivers alike. Because that is exactly what local people expect from us.
Safety is not just a question of one crossing
A safer Čimická will not come from a single measure. We need a combination of steps – better crossings, safer junctions, clearer sightlines and more effective speed enforcement.
That is also why the Prague 8 transport committee recommended that Prague City Hall apply again for average speed cameras on Čimická. It is another measure that can help improve safety for everyone using the street.
We will carry on
Our role is not only to point out problems, but above all to look for their solutions. So we will keep following the construction of the crossing by Vánková, pushing for changes at the Žalovská × Čimická junction and opening up other places you tell us about.
It is thanks to reports from local people that we can gradually turn Čimická into a street where people feel safer. That kind of change will not come from one decision or one construction project, but from long-term work and consistent pressure for specific solutions.
